Privacy Policy

Lightmode ("we", "our", or "us") operates the Nova application ("Nova"). This Privacy Policy explains what information is processed when you use Nova, how it is used, and the choices you have.

Privacy by design

Nova is designed to be local-first. Most of your content lives on your device. We do not design Nova to upload your grids, cards, or notes to Lightmode servers. Optional features (like iCloud Sync, subscriptions, analytics, and third-party integrations) may involve additional processing as described below.

Information Nova processes

Content stored on your device (default):

  • Your grids, cards, and notes
  • App preferences, settings, and theme customizations

This content is stored locally on your device unless you choose to enable syncing.

iCloud Sync (Nova X, optional):

  • Your grids, cards, notes, and app settings (as part of sync)

When enabled, your synced content is stored in your personal iCloud account. Lightmode does not host your iCloud content on its own servers. iCloud processing is governed by Apple's policies.

Subscription and purchase information:

  • Your email address
  • Subscription status (active/cancelled), plan, and renewal information
  • Transaction identifiers, receipts, and related billing metadata

Payments are processed by our payment provider (see “Third-Party Services”). Lightmode does not receive or store your full payment card details. We use subscription metadata to activate and maintain Nova X features.

Analytics and diagnostics (optional):

  • App usage events (e.g., features used, screens viewed)
  • Device and app information (device model, OS version, app version)
  • Diagnostics such as crash reports and error logs
  • Network information that may be processed by analytics providers (such as IP address)

If analytics are available in your build, they can be disabled in Nova settings. When disabled, Nova does not send analytics events to our analytics provider.

Support communications (if you contact us):

  • Your email address
  • The content of your message and any attachments you choose to send
  • Basic context needed to troubleshoot (for example, app version)

How we use information

We use the information described above to:

  • Provide Nova and its features (including enabling Nova X)
  • Process subscriptions and manage access to paid features
  • Provide customer support and respond to requests
  • Understand app performance and improve Nova (when analytics/diagnostics are enabled)
  • Protect Nova, prevent abuse, and maintain security

How information is shared

We may share information in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers: with vendors that help us run Nova (e.g., payments, analytics), only as needed to provide those services.
  • AI providers (Nova X, when you choose to use them): prompts and responses are sent between your device and the AI provider you configure. Your API keys are stored locally on your device.
  • Websites you monitor (Website Cards): your device connects directly to the URLs you specify; those websites may receive your IP address and standard request data.
  • Legal and safety: if we believe disclosure is necessary to comply with law, enforce our terms, or protect rights, safety, and security.
  • Business changes: if Nova is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset transfer, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

Third-Party Services

Nova may use the following third-party services:

AI Features (Nova X)

Nova X can connect to third-party AI providers (for example OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI) using API keys you provide. Your API keys are stored locally on your device and are not transmitted to Lightmode servers. Prompts and responses are exchanged directly between your device and the provider you select, and are subject to that provider’s policies.

Website Cards (Nova X)

Website Cards fetch content from the URLs you specify. Content is retrieved by your device and processed locally. Lightmode does not host or store the list of websites you monitor as part of the Website Cards feature.

Data retention

  • Local content: retained until you delete it or uninstall Nova.
  • iCloud content: retained according to your iCloud settings and Apple’s policies.
  • Subscription records: retained as needed to manage access, keep financial records, handle refunds/chargebacks, and comply with obligations.
  • Analytics/diagnostics (if enabled): retained according to our configuration and our provider’s retention practices.
  • Support communications: retained as long as needed to address your request and maintain a reasonable support history.

Your choices

You can control your data in the following ways:

  • Access and manage your content directly in the app.
  • Delete content in the app, uninstall Nova to remove local data, and manage iCloud data in your Apple settings.
  • Disable analytics (if available) in Nova settings.
  • Manage or cancel your subscription using the link in your purchase confirmation email (or other methods provided by the payment provider).
  • Contact us to request deletion of account-related or server-side data we may hold (such as support messages or subscription metadata).

Depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights. We will consider and respond to requests in accordance with applicable laws.

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children’s Privacy

Nova is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you (for example, through the app or by email).
